MASTER COURSE IN GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL SCIENCES

This is a two-year interclass course to obtain a degree in Geological Sciences (LM-74 class) or in Geophysical Sciences (LM-79 class), having the first year in common and leaving to the students the choice on how to continue and specialize their studies, during the second year.
The first year is dedicated to the integration of the concepts gained during the undergraduate course and to the completion of the basic scientific information. Furthermore, new conceptual itools will be provided for the quantitative approach to the geological problems deeply analysed during the second year, with differences depending on the direction chosen by the student (LM-74 or LM-79 class).

• Training activities
• Seminars

Study methodology is based on data collection in the field and/or laboratories and on numerical simulations, to better define geometry and kinematics of geological bodies, outlining their evolution by means of geological, thematic and paleogeographic maps. Knowledge to determine mechanical properties of rocks and to evaluate geological risks and resources will be provided, too.
Training activities (100 h) in external agencies/research centers/offices is mandatory.
Fieldwork is pivotal during the first year and the II year of the LM-74 and LM-79 courses, in order to better reconstruct the 3D geometry of the geological bodies and to interpret the geological and geophysical data acquired in the field.
The first semester will be given in English, when foreign students are in class.
During lectures, slides are always in English.

After the qualification exam, the graduate student can work as freelancer, in private geological, geophysical and engineering offices. Alternatively, he/she can find job opportunities in analysis laboratories, public administrations, geological and geophysical survey companies, engineering companies operating in buildings; mining and quarrying companies; Energy resources centers; research institutions. In addition, he/she can continue training by PhD courses.
